6 panels of my Frida series (my most personal pieces) will be on display/sale March 10!

Fridamania continues…

Recall my post about my Frida Series and that the pieces were born out of the need to process divorce and depression.  Now its time for celebration and renewals!  I LOVED making these pieces (China Marker on Masonite Board) even though they were done at 3 AM with my heart pounding and anxiety choking me.  They illustrate the power of art to process life changes.  Now it’s time to let them go and see WHERE they go, and where I go!

My painting carries with it the message of pain. – Frida Kahlo

Frida’s monobrow

kahlo-self-portrait

another Frida self-portrait

I am doing a bit of research regarding huipiles and thus am taking a good look at Frida who wore them daily.  But today, more than huipiles, what interests me about Frida is the glorification of her monobrow referred to by her husband, Diego, as “raven’s wings”.  Facial hair for Frida wasn’t something repugnant.  To the contrary.

Without a doubt, Frida was making a statement not just about her own image but also a statement about the indigenous women of Mexico.

Above all, the unibrow  is a reference to the third eye, a theme Frida used in many of her self-portraits:  Moses, 1945 by Frida Kahlo + Frida Kahlo, Diego and I, 1949 + Frida Kahlo, Diego On My Mind .

The third eye is the inner eye and directly related to the pineal gland.  Though not visible, it gives visibility via insight.  Awakening the third eye is a pursuit of those seeking enlightment.

Frida’s emphasis on her monobrow was further indication of her need to go beyond the senses and the physical pain she was subjected to. Her self-portraits were not about appearance but about the pursuit of conciousness.  About “Know Thyself“.

Proof That The Pineal Gland Is Literally A 3rd EyeThe Pineal Gland is regarded as one of the most important parts of your nervous system. It is shrouded in mystery, but as more and more people investigate it they are realising it is essentially a spiritual antenna, the mystical third eye

The Case of the Questionable Frida Kahlo Paintings

The Broken Column

PAIN. Frida expressed her pain via her paintings. Take a look at this blog post dealing with Frida’s pain written by someone, struck by a SUV while riding her bike, who has dealt with physical suffering, too.  She not only seeks natural solutions, she shares them as well. Great idea for a blog!

Art can be something you do to express yourself, or something you view to move your soul. Art has always been a passion of mine, I love viewing art, and I used to draw much more to help deal with sadness, especially during my years in high school and college. Recently, I have been drawn to looking at a painting by a personal heroine of mine, the Broken Column by Frida Kahlo.

Says so much doesn’t it?

When I was in high school, I had the extreme luck of having a Spanish teacher that was full of passion about a lot of things, and a fantastic outlook on life. Her intense love of art, music, and the general beauty in things was so strong, that you could not help catching the bug too. She probably doesn’t know what a huge influence to my life she was, and probably will…

Frida Kahlo’s Closet is Opened After 58 Years

Frida Kahlo is seen smoking after a 1946 operation. Frida Kahlo, wearing Chinese pajamas, is seen smoking after a 1946 operation.

“Imagine being in Frida Kahlo‘s childhood home and opening up a closet that has been locked for decades. Inside are hundreds of personal items – personal photographs, love letters, medications, jewelry, shoes, and clothing that still hold the smell of perfume and the last cigarette she smoked.

That is exactly what happened when Hilda Trujillo Soto, the director of the Frida Kahlo Museum opened the closets that had been locked since the Mexican artist’s death in 1954. Inside were over 300 items belonging to Frida Kahlo, and now, a wide array of what was found is on display at the Casa Azul, the Frida Kahlo Museum in the Coyoacán neighborhood of Mexico City.

Frida and her huipiles

An exhibition dedicated to Frida Kahlo recently opened here in Rome at the Scuderie del Quirinale.

Frida in Rome

Frida, after her marriage to Diego Riviera, decided to dress in the traditional costumes of the Tehuana women of Tehuantepec. Anyone who reads this blog routinely knows how much I love huipiles!  So for awhile I will join in on the Friadamania so I can do some heavy duty huipiles related posting.
