Morning Walk

Yesterday I had a dental appointment. It was a lovely day for a walk so I took the tram to Piazza Ungheria and from there walked the rest of the way.

Turn around and Viale Regina Margherita becomes Viale Parioli.

Le strisce pedonali aka pedestrian crossing

Parioli is an elegant neighborhood created during the time of Mussolini’s Fascist Rome. The development of this neighborhood was sponsored by its landowners. The main boulevard, Viale Parioli, is populated by elegant villas semi-hidden by the trees lining the street. At the time of its construction, Parioli was the place to live for high-ranking fascist functionaries.

This is Piazza Pitagora where an important archeological discovery was made in October 2022. While installing an electricall network, a Roman road paved with basalt as well as a funerary were revealed. The leaning parasol pine indicates where the excavations took place. To the left, via Mercalli and, to the right, via Bertoloni, the street where my dentist is.

These parasol pines look like they’re floating when seen from a distance.

Thanks to having watched episodes of Time Team, I though I was looking at wattle but it was just the weaving in and out of a climbing vine.

The photo is taken from via Angelo Secchi. Secchi (1818-1878) was a Jesuit and astronomer. You can see his bust on a pedestal at the Pincio gardens in the center of Rome.

Still on via Angelo Secchi. On this street, Mussolini bought a house for his daughter, Edda, and her husband Galeazzo Ciano.

The mosicas you have to walk on to get to my dentist…every time I go for a cleaning, I must step on these mosaics at least twice. The same motif is used in my buildings courtyard.

Across the street from my dentist is Villa Fasciotti, now the Embassy of the Principality of Monaco in Rome. The villa, acquired in 1962 by Monaco, is located at via Bertoloni, 36.

This is the embassy as seen from via Anastasio Kirchner. Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680) was a Jesuit scholar and polymath.
