“Frequencies” and Muy Marcottage.

This dress is named “FreQuencies.”

Before being wrapped with strips of red & white checkered fabric, it was a voluminous purple dress.  The variations of the checks remind me of variations in brain wave frequencies.

Brain waves have been grouped according to their frequencies and labeled with Greek letters. Their most common frequencies include alpha, beta, delta, and theta.”

I am fixated with frequencies. “Everything is made up of energy at various frequencies.” Which means that frequencies can affect one’s energy.

Every level of creation is a frequency. One frequency melts into the other, and this is how the process of evolution takes place. The night comes to an end and the dawn begins. At dawn, when the darkness and dullness of the night is over, some inspiring freshness comes and there is a different frequency in the whole atmosphere. At midday there is another big change in frequency; at evening, a different frequency; at midnight, a different frequency. This cycle of change is perpetual, and because everything is a frequency there is sound at every stage.

The House of Mirth

More MUY MARCOTTAGE:

While sewing on this dress, for some unknown reason, I thought about Lily Bart.

Many years ago, I accompanied my daughter to Aix-in-Provence for a language course.  My reading companion was Edith Wharton’s THE HOUSE OF MIRTH.  Published in 1905, the book gets its title from Ecclesiastes 7:4: The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

The protagonist is Lily Bart, 29 and unmarried. Lily will not marry the man she really loves because he is not rich thus dedicates her time trying to find a wealthy husband.  Unfortunately, Lily sabotages all of her possibilities for marriage as she unwittingly gets involved in a scandal that will eternally ruin her.

I remember quite well the night I finished reading THE HOUSE OF MIRTH because I cried and cried. Why did the book touch me so much? Was it just because I was tired from travelling or because I was leaving my daughter alone in France for a month?  Or because I was just overdosing on empathy?

At the turn of the century, tableau vivant parties were quite trendy.  The idea was to recreate a “living picture”  where a group of people dressed up and, with the use of props, tried to recreate a famous painting.

At one point in the book, Lily is invited to take part in a Tableau Vivant for a High Society fashion event. She portrays herself as Mrs. Richard Bennett Lloyd by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Lily would like to be seen as beautiful and pure instead of as an attractive woman desperately trying to find a rich husband – the person she really is.

Lily was stuck in a pose.

Happy

«The mind can deliberately change the way it sees things» – Colin Wilson –

This summer I made many Muy Marcottage dresses.  Well, actually  many were  “almost done” but just needed to be finished.  So, surrounded by plants, I spent many summer mornings sitting on our terrace stitching .  It made me mellow.  And happy.

So what is happiness other than inter-relating with the world around you in a positive way?

Here is the dress “Happy” hanging next to my Clippings Garden.   We found a wooden balcony rail next to the dumpster, took it home, painted it and hung it vertically on our terrace wall. Then we nailed a bunch of plastic detergent bottles onto it where we’ve planted various clippings.  Vertical gardens can be very entertaining!

A CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE, for me, includes the desire to nourish myself properly and to do so spending as little as possible.  Obviously, a garden would help only I don’t have any land, just a terrace so I am experimenting with container vertical gardens.

Every Muy Marcottage dress has a word or phrase stitched on it making the dress somewhat dilectical, no?

This dress is Happy, Flirtatious and Easy To Wear.

Ruffles

A ruffle has motion and it’s this motion that makes it happy.

Initially,  I wanted nice slick labels for my Muy Marcottage dresses but reconsidered for economic and ecologial reasons. Plus, handwriting your own label is somewhat like signing a painting!

Dance to be healthy

Change of lifestyle means, obviously, a positive change.  One important factor is that of our health.  To keep ourselves healthy we all know the basics:  proper diet and exercise.  But even the kind of exercise one chooses makes a difference.

Studies show that regular dancing helps combat the risk of dementia by 76%.  Yes, that’s right, a little cha-cha-cha will help keep your mind young!

Apparently, it’s all about neurons. Young brains adapt more easily to dying neurons.  But, with age, we tend to be habitual in our thinking

And habits can solidify flow.  But dance keeps your mind from becoming rigid – it’s the music that tells you what to do and not habit.  This helps keep the brain flexible.

A Change in Lifestyle

“Poverty wants… imagination” foto via troikanoi

Back from Paros where I had 3 very busy months – much sewing, writing and painting.

The economic situation in Greece is tragic. Many shops have closed as tourism was down, some say, by 40%. So obviously, many jobs have been lost. I recently read an article about the number of middle-aged men who once had interesting, well paying jobs who have been forced to migrate. For example, to Sweden where they now work as janitors. It’s a very spOOKy situation and not just limited to Greece.

The world is rapidly changing and, whether or not we want to, we will be forced to change with it.

Paros fairs better than Athens mainly because of their agriculture. Much food is grown locally and most every Parian has relatives who farm. Also, being a small island, there’s still a strong sense of community. Free lunches for the needy have been organized by the little church near my house so on Paros, despite all the difficulties, one will not die of hunger.

Like most people, I, too, have concerns about the future – my own and, even more so, that of my children. There are no easy and immediately available solutions out there.  Worldwide, politicians, who should be resolving these problems, have revealed themselves to be inadequately prepared and quite often corrupt and only out for themselves. I wonder why we must subsidize those who do us more harm than good. So what do to?

The reality of it all is so complex thus full of variables thus impossible to predict and consequently impossible to properly prepare oneself for what’s to come.

Of course, we all are trying to spend less, recycle for need more so than for conviction, barter and not buy, etc.  And although it may not be much, as a friend of mine says “tutto fa” meaning everything helps.  However, it’s what this economic impotence does to the psyche that concerns me the most.  In Greece, but in Italy as well where I live most of the time, there is an epidemic of men who suicide because they’ve lost their jobs and are chronically unemployed. Desperation multiplied by desperation. SpOOKy.

Survival is not just the domain of the fittest. It’s the domain of those who know how to adapt. So if I can’t change the economic situation, at least I can change the way I affront it.

And that’s why I’ve decided that it’s time for a change in lifestyle.
