Space debris

Bunny space debris by Cynthia Korzekwa
Dr Brian O’Leary, physics professor,  astronaut and founding president of the New Energy Movement, made this claim a few months before his death: aliens have been trying to contact us for a very long time.

Well, one may wonder, just why do they want to contact us? The reasons may be many but here’s one to take into consideration: they are tired of our space trash and want us to stop throwing our junk on their roads.

Not happy enough with junking up our own planet, we are throwing trash into space as well. Space debris is becoming a big problem. Scientists are now asking what would happen if debris collided with satellites or other debris?

One Growing Threat of Space Debris is that it will eventually fall back down on us as has already happened in the past.  In 1997, a woman in Turley, Oklahoma was struck with some space junk later identified as a Delta 2 booster reentering into the Earth’s atmosphere.  Luckily, she was not severly hurt.

So, advice from Bunny:  Watch for falling objects!

The Aesthetics of Mending.

Mending is a philosophy. And a measurement of value.  If something must be mended, it means it has been used, thus is useful.  Unfortunately, we have a tendency to look at much of what we own as being something disposable.  We show no affection for what we have and quite easily throw things away when they  become obsolete or broken. Or simply no longer interesting to us. And it seems as if we’ve transfered this attitude towards people and our society as well.

Reparation is a form of beauty.

PET lamps

YOU MUST SEE THIS!  Colourful Lamps Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles…In the Summer of 2011, industrial designer Alvaro Catalán de Ocón travelled to Colombia, to be part of a project spearheaded by psychologist and activist Hélène Le Drogou, focusing on the plastic waste that is contaminating the Colombian Amazon and the reuse of discarded PET bottles. Combining local resources with ancient artisan textile techniques Alvaro transformed mass produced objects with a short and specific lifespan into one of a kind functional products.

It is also a tutorial as to how to make these fantastic lamps from PET bottles.

At  Remarkable Repairs, We received over 60 entries from all over the world in our Most Remarkable Repair Contest. They are all listed here. Do find yourself inspired by these clever repairs and pick your favourite.
Sunday 30 August, during the last day of Platform21 = Repairing, we announced who made the most remarkable repair according to our jury.

REPAIR IS BEAUTIFUL began with the idea of solving frustration. A broken object delivers frustration because it doesn’t achieve its functionality, but the same principle applies to a broken system that caused the financial crisis, which has affected our lives since 2008.

But on seeing my pile of broken crocks the group became animated, they fell on the pieces re-arranging back into plates and all said they preferred them broken, because now I have proper mending to consider not just simulated, contrived and controlled versions.

A Purse on Paros

Muy Marcottage Summer Purse by Cynthia Korzekwa

My Summer Purse

Soon we will be leaving for Paros. There’s so much to do. Luckily, I don’t have that much packing  as most of My Summer Look is already there. Like the handbag above. I bought it at the outdoor market near my studio here in Rome. It was Well Worn but I liked the shape of it. So I bought it for 50 cents, took it to the studio for a good clean up before painting it with flowers. Wearing it on my arm is like walking with a garden!

Earrings for Paul McCartney’s ears

Earrings for Paul McCartney’s earsIf you were listening to the radio while in New York October of 1969, you might have heard someone named “Tom” call in claiming that the real Paul McCartney was dead. As proof of Paul’s death,  “Tom” cited hidden clues on the cover of the Beatle’s “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album.  Initially, this claim animated a lot of souls but eventually was considered a hoax.  That is, until  2009 when two Italians, Francesco Gavazzeni and Gabriella Carlesi , forensics experts, conducted a biometrical analysis of “Paul fotos” before and after his reported death. They concluded that there were enough discrepancies in the facial features  to indicate that there were indeed two different Pauls.
The main discrepancy was that of the ears. The earlobes of the “Before” Paul were different that then earlobes of the “After“ Paul.  Had they pierced their tragus, these Paul Is Dead theories might have disappeared.
Earrings have been around for at least 5,000 years.  They are even mentioned in the Bible.  In some ancient cultures, earrings were worn as amulets to keep evil spirits from entering the body.
Siddhartha use to wear earrings, too. That is until he became Buddha.  As a young prince, he wore earrings as an indication of his position and of his wealth.  But when he became a monk, he took off his jewellery.  However, by this time the weight of the earrings had stretched out his lobes.  That’s why, as Buddha, he’s depicted with elongated ears.
As for myself, I never feel completely dressed unless I’m wearing earrings and adorned like a Christmas tree.

Empathy and Ecofeminism

One hot afternoon, researcher Giacomo Rizzolatti and team, were working with monkeys when they decided it was time for a gelato break. In the lab, joyfully eating their ice-cream, they totally forgot about the monkeys. The monkeys, still hooked-up to brain activity monitors, registered pleasure as they observed the pleasure of the ice-cream eating researchers. And that’s how, serendipitously, mirror neurons were discovered.

Mirror neurons are brain cells that respond, with mimicry, to the actions of others. This reaction, generally, is known as empathy.

Empathy is the capacity to recognize and understand the feelings of another.

The female brain is wired for empathy whereas the male brain is not. And for one simple reason: women, and not men, have babies.

Empathy permits women to better care and protect their offspring. For example, how could a mother and a non-speaking baby communicate otherwise? Thus empathy and maternal instinct have much in common.

Maternal instinct is not limited to one’s own children. Anyone who has nursed a baby knows that whenever you hear a baby cry, yours or not, the breasts automatically leak milk. And maternal instinct is not limited to humans. Think of all those tender Facebook posts showing animals of one species nourishing animals of another.

Maternal instinct and empathy
Dog & Ducklings

Empathy, a means of inter-relating, is fundamental for our survival and evolution. It is an awareness that we are all dependent one upon the other. Empathy is the basis of a sense of community, of a healthy society. Without it, there is nothing civil about civilization.

A chain is a chain because its links are united…the links alone serve nothing.

The Earth is a Mother. And we are her children. Unfortunately, many of us are ungrateful and bite the hand that feeds us. But it hasn’t always been this way. Many ancient cultures  worshipped the Great Cosmic Mother. Because adoring a mother meant adoring life itself.

But, around the fourth millennium B.C., everything changed. Warriors from the north began to invade  peaceful cultures. These Indo-Europeans were violent and on horseback. Their aim was to invade, pillage, plunder and annihilate existing customs and beliefs. Male gods began to appear. These gods were angry, vindictive, jealous and punitive. And, above all, they hated women.

Invaders rode horses and hated women

With force, these invaders dominated and sought to obliterate nature’s plan of having males and females exist in synergy and solidarity. Our complementary role was lost. The world was “materialized” with the concept of ownership and spiritual needs were met with dogma. The priorities of these invaders were not the priorities of women. Or of nature. As a result, our planet now is in great difficulty.

Ecofeminism is a response, an attempt to repair the damage done. It is an expression of empathy for the environment.

Ecofeminism is a mother nursing her child.
